A unique 12-day professional massage workshop

This class is specifically designed to teach participants how to deliver
the Jari Menari massage, an internationally recognized massage style,
that emphasizes rhythm, flow, and connection.

Class Session Massage Training

The workshop focuses on the philosophies and techniques that make this massage style unique, starting with the 'oil-free' warming introduction and continuing with the face down sequence for 45 minutes.

The workshop provides participants with an in-depth understanding of the Jari Menari sequence and how it's delivered. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a solid foundation in the Jari Menari massage and be able to deliver it with confidence.

The workshop includes daily opportunities for hands-on practice and feedback to ensure that participants are mastering the techniques and concepts being taught.

The inclusion of an awakening movement session at the beginning of each will prepare the body and mind for the day's activities.

The two, 3-hour sessions, with a break for lunch in the garden café, allow for adequate time to learn and practice the techniques without feeling overwhelmed. The in-depth classes incorporate demonstration, instruction, and practice, to ensure that participants fully understand the concepts.

The workshop offers opportunities for participants to interact with others from around the world and learn about local Indonesian culture and customs. This provides a rich and meaningful experience that goes beyond learning massage techniques. Developing friendships with fellow participants will create lasting connections and a sense of community.

The 12 days class includes:

  • Double occupancy accommodation for 15 nights, with airport transfers.
  • Breakfast daily at the hotel, snacks, and lunch at the Training Center
  • Two visits to local spas for comparative analysis
  • 80-hours of massage instruction
  • A 90-minute Jari Menari Perfect Massage Session
  • Professional supplies available at reduced prices

About Jari Menari: Our Story

Jari Menari Story

Since the late 1990s, spas in Bali have
sprouted, grown and blossomed like lotus flowers. Massages are available at nearly every hotel, resort and beauty salon.

Something that was once the privilege of the rich has become accessible to everyone. Bali now hosts the highest concentration of spas in the whole of Southeast Asia, and the island is a magnet for massage lovers seeking an indulgence that will
combat stress, reduce muscle tension and ease fatigue.

Yet, despite this explosion of facilities and services within the world of wellness, back in 2001, when we opened Jari Menari, opportunities for men to work in the profession were still extremely limited.

Our solid experience in massage training and education has revealed that male practitioners have the intuitive ability to administer massage with focused, consistent pressure, which is what our guests prefer.

From the very beginning,
Jari Menari has followed its vision to train young men in the vocational skills of massage, as well as anatomy, English-speaking skills, and exemplary guest service.

The annual AsiaSpa Awards, which were created in 2005 by AsiaSpa magazine, set the benchmark for the quality and innovation of spas within the Asia region. The 2016 AsiaSpa Awards presentation ceremony took place on November 16th at WOOBAR at W, Hong Kong, with the glamorous occasion attended by representatives of the region’s outstanding brands.

A panel of 21 judges selected the best in the business across 24 categories. Awards were presented to spas, hotels and resorts, retreats, academies and products, recognised for raising the bar of product and treatment standards.

Jari Menari's technical advisor, Susan Stein, who was in Hong Kong to accept the coveted award and trophy, said, "We are thrilled to receive this fabulous award, and honoured to be recognised by the spa-industry for our commitment to excellence in the delivery of our services. This latest distinction, which follows numerous other accolades, including the UK's Sunday Times Magazine 'Best Value for Money in a Spa, Worldwide' Award 2016, serves to confirm Jari Menari’s preeminence within the wellness industry.

A Happy Song Esalen Massage

In the early 1960s, before anyone had heard the term human potential, two young visionaries, Dick Price and Michael Murphy, decided to open an alternative educational center on the beautiful Big Sur coast. They dedicated their center to exploring the world “of unrealized human capacities that lie beyond the imagination,” as author and humanist Aldous Huxley termed human potential. Their intention was to create an experimental think tank by drawing together some of the leading philosophers, psychologists, artists, authors and somatic pioneers, and then both participate in and observe what transpired when these great minds gathered together in the same place.

To that end, Price and Murphy brought some of the most innovative and inspiring thinkers and doers of the time to Esalen Institute, including Abraham Maslow, Huxley, Alan Watts, Fritz Perls, Charlotte Selver, Moshe Feldenkrais, Ida Rolf, Gregory Bateson and Milton Trager. These pioneering people, with their unique personalities, met, melded and shared their varied perspectives, including in their conversations the original (to the Western mind) idea of viewing the individual as a whole integrated being, not the artificial division of the mind from the body. Using Swedish massage, Western psychology, Eastern philosophy and Selver’s practices of sensory awareness, Bernie Gunther and Molly Day Shackman worked together to develop a new approach to a full-body massage. Joined by Storm Accioli, Seymour Carter and others, they explore how healing touch could be used for personal—and eventually social— transformation. And so it was in this rich environment, stimulated by the fascinating discussions and explorations taking place and surrounded by the powerful natural beauty of the Big Sur Coast, Esalen® Massage—a massage practice that acknowledged the wholeness of the body-mind connection—was born.

Sensory-awareness practices help ractitioners develop the ability to feel the natural rhythms of their own bodies.

The session

Taking a few minutes to create a grounded and centered inner space, the practitioner approaches the table with a quiet and sensitive, yet strong, quality of presence, opening a space for intuition to influence the massage session. Instead of looking at the individual parts as separate from each other, the wholeness of the integrated being is emphasized, incorporating long, integrating strokes to give a sense of this wholeness and connection.

Sensory-awareness practices continue to help practitioners in developing this ability to sense and listen, to be able to feel the natural rhythms of their own bodies and translate that knowledge into sensing the rhythms of a client’s body. The practitioner follows the flow, attuning, relaxing and connecting long, integrating strokes to the natural rhythms of the client.

When meeting a tight place, an area of held tension, instead of working the tissue and forcing it to let go—and perhaps creating more stress—the Esalen massage practitioner explores, or plays with, the tissue, coaxing it to soften, let go and eventually relax.

This noninvasive touch allows practitioners to vary the pressure from light to deep and back again, depending on the area of the body being touched and the quality of the tissue under their hands. An attitude of exploration, instead of a programmed technique, prevails throughout the entire massage session.

Frequently, the practitioner returns to the slow, flowing, long stroke, integrating deeper contact, encouraging the client to feel wholly connected and allowing the body systems to move into balance.

What makes Esalen Massage unique

In an Esalen massage, four basic principles are operating:

  1. The practitioner is working with, instead of on, the client.

  2. The massage is a moving meditation; the practitioner is committed to being as fully present as possible for the entire massage session, bringing a full-hearted, meditative presence to the table.

  3. The practitioner is aware that a client may be affected on physical, mental, emotional or even spiritual levels.

  4. Long, flowing strokes, integrated throughout the massage give a sense of relaxation, connection and wholeness.

When looking at these principles more deeply, it is apparent how interrelated they are: When a practitioner is working with, instead of on, a client, the practitioner learns to listen and respond to what he/she is feeling both in the actual tissue and on an intuitive level.

Consequently, the Esalen practitioner responds to the unique issues presented by the individual client, instead of imposing a particular protocol, form or set way of working, as in some other forms of massage. In order to successfully feel and know what is appropriate for a particular client, the practitioner needs to develop a full- hearted presence, the ability to be truly present and focused with the client, and to listen with the whole being.

Often, bringing this full-hearted presence to the table enables a client to feel safe enough internally to relax and let go on very deep levels. Formerly unexpressed emotions, the holding of tissue that often follows with trapped emotions, or even held pain due to physical or emotional trauma—all have the opportunity to rise to the surface and clear from the bodymind, frequently affecting the client on more than a physical level.

The responsibility of the Esalen practitioner is to stay fully present and provide a safe space, thus supporting the release of the pain or emotion that was originally trapped in the tissue in the body.

The fourth principle, the long, flowing strokes in an Esalen massage, not only relax and prepare clients for a deeper touch, they also easily move the practitioner from one area to another area of the body, supporting the feelings of connection, integration and wholeness. The effectiveness of the long, integrating strokes is becoming more apparent as evidenced by the number of other massage modalities that have begun incorporating signature Esalen strokes.

An integrated technique

Esalen massage easily lends itself to both enhancing and integrating aspects of other massage modalities. Over the years, Esalen practitioners have been fortunate in having the opportunity to experience and work with the creators and disseminators of now well-established bodywork systems and martial art disciplines.

Al Huang and his wonderful way with tai chi contributed to the fluid movements of Esalen practitioners as they move around the table when giving a massage. A student of Ida Rolf, Ph.D., developer of Rolfing® Structural Integration, Al Drucker, brought deep-tissue massage to Esalen, which various practitioners integrated into their Esalen massage sessions. A number of Esalen practitioners studied with Milton Trager, M.D., developer of Trager Work, on his numerous visits to Esalen. Trager’s gentle, rocking motions coaxed tight places to relax and let go and were easily assimilated into Esalen bodywork. Pierre Pannetier, protégé of Randolph Stone, M.D., who developed polarity therapy, helped practitioners to more consciously work with energy and electromagnetic fields during their sessions. Fritz Smith brought Zero Balancing to the table; Patricia Caldwell taught shiatsu; and many practitioners added in the gentle sensing and balancing moves of craniosacral work.

Benefits of Esalen Massage

As in most massage modalities, Esalen massage increases the blood supply and nutrition to muscles, reduces blood pressure, slows the heart rate, relaxes muscle spasms, increases lymph flow and effects a host of other benefits common to other massage practices.

Esalen massage also uses passive joint mobilization to help relax muscles and increase a client’s range of motion, in addition to reaching muscles that are frequently more difficult to contact. Gentle stretching, often incorporated into an Esalen massage, also increases the range of motion of a limb or the mobility of the neck and in addition, helps the client realize where a muscle is held and the possibility of letting go. One client commented, “When she (the massage practitioner) gently lifted and rolled my head to the side, I suddenly realized how much I was holding my neck, and then, I was amazed at how easily I could let go.”

Introduction to Esalen Massage : One-Day & Two-Day Classes

Esalen massage was developed in Big Sur, California, and is an intuitive, blend of techniques utilizing long, slow, flowing strokes that cover the entire body. These strokes help create a sense of connection and wholeness in the recipient.

There are no abrupt transitions, only a stream of seamless, integrated movements that deepen as the practitioner’s hands, fingers, and forearm begin to find specific areas of tension.

Other techniques include gentle stretching, rhythmic rocking, and passive movement of the joints as each of these can help increase range of motion and loosen tight muscles. Throughout the session, the practitioner will pause, creating stillness and space for the Guest to integrate the feelings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Jari Menari has an allmale team of professionally trained therapists, all of whom are certified by the Indonesian Government. Each therapist completes 200 hours of initial professional training, followed by 75 hours of refresher training every year to maintain high standards of skill, safety, and consistency.

There are very few spas in Bali that offer professionally trained male therapists. Jari Menari therapists are known for their steady pressure and strong massage, when requested, and their ability to customdesign each massage to relieve tension according to the guest’s individual needs.

Guests are provided with access to changing rooms featuring:

• Beautiful shower stalls
• Customblended soaps and shampoos
• Secure lockers for valuables during the massage
• Hair dryers
• Good lighting for make-up application

For comfort and hygiene:

• Disposable paper pants are provided for all guests
• Sarongs are supplied to wear from the changing room to the massage room
• Sandals are provided for moving between areas

Jari Menari offers:
• 16 individual massage rooms, suitable for single guests or couples
• A VIP suite featuring a couple’s bathtub
• Massage rooms may be airconditioned or openair. Each room opens onto a waterfall, creating a soothing, natural sound throughout the massage. Rooms are environmentally appealing, offering fresh air, natural light and the sound of running water.

[Hong Kong, 19 November 2018]Hong Kong’s most anticipated spa and wellness event of the year, the 14th annual AsiaSpa Awards took place on November 15 at W Hong Kong with the glamorous occasion attended by representatives of the region’s outstanding brands.
The 2018 Awards honoured nominees, industry icons and guests, for an evening themed ‘Tokyo Blue’.

A panel of 20 judges selected the best in the business across 26 categories. Awards were presented to spas, hotels and resorts, retreats and products recognized for raising the bar of product and treatment standards.

The elegant evening saw more than 400 professionals celebrate the winners who have demonstrated stellar products and services within the region’s best spas and resorts. These included Maia Spa, Fusion Maia, Da Nang City, Vietnam, which took home ‘Spa of the Year (Southeast Asia & the Pacific)’, while ‘Spa of the Year (North & West Asia)’ went to Chuan Spa, Cordis Hong Kong. Exception Marine, Thalgo was awarded ‘Anti-Ageing Product Line of the Year’, and MDNA Skin, MDNA Skin was recognized as ‘Natural Product Line of the Year’. Gaya Island Resort, Sabah, Malaysia, received ‘Destination Hotel/Resort of the Year’, while The Sukhothai Shanghai, China, was ‘Urban Hotel of the Year’.

“This year’s AsiaSpa Awards are even more special because we’re celebrating the magazine’s 15th anniversary. We’re really proud of the staying power we have in the publishing world as an authority on all things spa and wellness in the region. It’s encouraging to see the commitment to improvement in the industry with so many professionals who are genuinely passionate about delivering authentic wellness through alternative therapies. As Jari Menari approaches its 25th anniversary on August 28, 2026, we are celebrating one of the experiences that has become part of our story in Bali, the Absolutely Amazing Four Hand Massage. 2 therapists, four hands and one carefully coordinated rhythm can create 5 remarkable benefits for the body and mind, from deeper relaxation and balanced attention to a greater sense of body awareness, comfort and wholeness.

For 25 years, touch has been at the heart of Jari Menari. Our name means “Dancing Fingers”, and perhaps nowhere is that idea felt more clearly than during a Four Hand Massage. Instead of one therapist moving around the body, two therapists work simultaneously, allowing four hands to move with a shared rhythm. The experience is not simply about receiving twice as much massage. It is about coordination, timing and creating a continuous flow that encourages the body to gradually let go.

The first benefit is a deeper sense of relaxation. With four hands moving at the same time, the mind has more sensations to process than it normally would during a traditional massage. Rather than following or anticipating where the next movement will come from, many guests find it easier to surrender to the rhythm. Thoughts can become quieter, breathing may naturally slow, and attention begins to move away from the outside world and back toward the body.

The second benefit is more balanced attention across the body. Two therapists can work on different areas simultaneously while following the same rhythm and intention. One may be working through the upper body while the other maintains movement through the legs, before their hands travel and meet again in another sequence. This creates a feeling of continuity from head to toe rather than treating the body as a collection of separate areas. The sensation is fluid, connected and distinctly Jari Menari.

The third benefit is consistent rhythmic pressure. Rhythm has always been an important element of the Jari Menari massage philosophy. Our therapists are trained to use long, confident movements and carefully controlled pressure, adapting each session to the guest in front of them. In a Four Hand Massage, this requires another level of awareness. Both therapists must listen not only to the body beneath their hands, but also to each other, matching pace, pressure and movement so that four hands can feel like one coordinated experience.

The fourth benefit is greater attention to tired and tense areas without losing the sense of a full-body massage. Modern life can leave tension in several places at once. Hours at a desk may affect the shoulders and back, travel can leave the legs feeling heavy, while an active Bali holiday may create fatigue throughout the body. With two therapists working together, different areas can receive focused attention while the overall massage continues to flow. The aim is not simply to work harder, but to work more intelligently and harmoniously.

The fifth benefit is perhaps the most difficult to describe until it is experienced, a stronger sense of connection with your own body. Techniques can be taught and practised, but meaningful touch also requires presence.

Our 25th anniversary gives us a special opportunity to reflect on that idea. Styles may evolve, spaces may change and new wellness experiences may appear, but the human body still responds to thoughtful touch. The relationship between therapist and guest remains personal, and the simple act of slowing down remains increasingly valuable in a busy world. The Artisan Craft of Making Sarong in Bali


Sarongs are the lovely, soft covering you wrap yourself in when going from the changing room to the massage tables at Jari Menari. For 17 years, we have used the same sarong maker to provide us with these stunning, colorful, luxurious wraps. Watching the process of a sarong being made is so fabulous, I wanted to share it with you.

Martin, The Sarong Man, as he is affectionally called, lives just 30 minutes from Jari Menari, running the factory his father started in 1982. The hand stamped, batik process, is complicated yet simple, perfected over the years, and complimented with one-of-a-kind, purpose created machinery that makes the process work smoothly.

To start making a sarong, a carved, copper metal stamp is created and that image will be placed, numerous times, on the sarong. Jari Menari, selected a bamboo cluster, and that stamp has been used since the first day we opened. The process begins by warming and melting the wax, mixing it with pine sap, in a basin, and then heating the wax until the correct temperature is achieved. The metal stamp is then dipped in the molten wax and when the stamp emerges out of the dripping wax bath, it is directly stamped on the white, 100%, first quality, sarong material, in a random pattern.

The sheath of material, usually 20 meters, is stamped and as the wax dries, the dye colors are mixed.The imported powders are weighed out to the gram to get consistency in colors. The blended colors are then mixed into the water bath.

The material is then run through the special custom-designed machines, on rollers, and through the vat of color, several times to achieve consistency. The material is then rolled around a pole and wrapped, to completely absorb the colors.

The process continues with the material being dipped into a vat of boiling water, to remove the wax , leaving the white pattern where the wax has melted away.

The material is left to dry in the sun and later will be cut and sewn, before being delivered to Jari Menari. The process is fascinating to watch as the young men perform their magic on the colors and materials, hand crafting the beautiful sarongs we use each day.

Recently one of our staff had a bad motorcycle accident and lost his 5 front teeth. Getting him to a dentist was very important for us. Through doing this we have begun looking into initiating dental treatment for all of our wonderful Jari Menari staff. Introducing them to the benefits of regular dental care is now a priority. Treatment has begun with dental checks and 'scaling' or deep cleaning and for many of our staff this is a first.

An excellent, local dentist has offered a special program for Jari Menari with 4 employees per week already being booked in for dental checks and deep cleaning. A clean mouth is essential for everyone and especially when they are dealing with the public. Getting rid of bacteria, making sure the breath is fresh, checking if there are any cavities and keeping teeth fresh and strong are all issues addressed by this benefit to staff. So far, all have enjoyed the process. A bit painful they say but they know that passes quickly.

We have fabulous news that our talented massage therapist, Billy, is back at work after 6 months of hospitalization, surgery and rehabilitation. Billy was involved in a late night, serious motorbike accident, when he was on his way home from work and was hit by an Australia visitor to Bali, who unfortunately was deceased at the scene, leaving Billy with very serious injuries. 6 months later, we can say, Billy is definitely a resilient and determined young man.

Jari Menari’s sense of ‘family’ is a very important and we look after each other especially in times of difficulty. Within 24 hours of the accident, Jari Menari staff were at his bedside making sure he had support around him and ensuring that our staff medical insurance policies were in place. Jari Menari staff supported Billy on a regular basis as the days and weeks passed providing regular visits and even providing massages as he lay in his hospital bed.

We thank the wonderful surgeons who performed life-saving brain surgery on Billy and especially to Dr. Made and the staff of Rumah Sakit Daerah Mangusada hospital in Mengwi, Denpasar for all of their wonderful work. https://www.rsudmangusada.badungkab.go.id/

It has taken quite a while but Billy has overcome his reluctance to ride a motorbike and is comfortable in traffic once again. Many thanks go to the family of the Australian victim for assisting Billy financially enabling him to replace his motorbike.

One of the reasons doctors in Bali are very experienced dealing with motorbike accident victims is because there are so many for them to deal with and a significant percentage of these involve visitors to the island. PLEASE ensure you have the appropriate insurance before hiring/riding a motorbike in Bali and remember to wear a good helmet, always wear shoes, take note of the laws and driving conditions, drive sober and finally.…….just slow down!

Jari Menari is proud to sponsor, for the second year in a row, a young man to attend Campuhan College in Ubud. The college takes underprivileged young men and women, and with support from the Bali Ex-pat and local community plus International sponsors, engages them in a wonderful 9 month course of English, Videography and Computer Skills. Applicants are interviewed and selected by need and desire for personal growth. Once they have completed their studies they experience a fabulous graduation ceremony, which they coordinate, to celebrate their well-deserved success.

These students are from the all over Bali and this year Jari Menari is supporting Merta Yana, from the village of Les, in North Bali. The main economic activity for his community in Les is the farming of salt. Merta has expressed his desire to support his family in the future by learning new skills that will also help him throughout his life.

I thought it would be fun to reconnect by sharing the details of what we have been doing this past year. So, here is the story of The Gardens, the new venue waiting to be discovered on your return to Jari Menari and Bali.

The pandemic shut down most travel to Bali in April 2020. To keep the team engaged, positive and the doors open to those that came wearily in, we needed a project. It was our once fully-occupied parking lot, which stretched empty in front of our eyes, that generated the inspiration. Amazingly, the concept of cultivating a live, thriving garden came to mind and fruition, within 7 months. Guidelines focussed mostly on recycling materials to make the transformation happen.

The Gardens schedule includes drawing and yoga classes, a monthly market, and slide presentations often featuring “A peek into the seas of Indonesia”. Guests are invited to enjoy a picnic in the park, meditate, listen to ‘brain-balancing tapes’ or take a class in massage.

The Gardens are available for private hire to host groups for dining with a small group of friends, especially for those hesitant to return to group experiences in public restaurants. The Gardens are a perfect venue for a child’s birthday party too.

As a Leader in Bali Spa programming, Jari Menari actively researched, that when tourism opens again, how can we assist those looking for deep, healing sessions, aimed at enhancing mental health and balance. The concept of The Gardens is a program we look forward to sharing with you.

After a long hiatus dating from the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Jari Menari is now cautiously reopening while employing an abundance of caution, enhanced by strict hygiene protocols, and many additional steps - all to enhance guest safety and a feeling of security during each session of therapeutic pampering.

Safety and health are of paramount importance for visitors to Jari Menari after the outbreak of COVID-19. Before entering the building in the parking area, guests encounter a hand washing station for their use. Upon entering the building, a temperature check is mandatory as guests are made aware of convenient hand sanitizers placed throughout the building.



Masks are mandatory for staff and guests at all times. Changing areas are managed to maximize physical distancing. Surfaces and equipment in the changing and treatment rooms are wiped down and disinfected before and after each visit. Similarly, both guests and staff are required to shower before and after each session.

Conversations are kept to an absolute minimum and never encouraged while a guest is receiving a massage.

While the treatments provided at Jari Menari have always focused on releasing stress and tension, in the wake of the Pandemic, safeguarding guests' health and welfare has become the steadfast vision of every member of the Jari Menari team.

Seminyak is the home of Jari Menari however Seminyak offers so many other fabulous places to visit. It has long beaches, vast shopping streets and shops, fantastic restaurants and coffee shops, exciting cultural locations and along with all this hustle and bustle there is a feeling of more space and complete relaxation. Good surf can be found each day and you can rent a board (and a teacher) and ride the waves or just stick to swimming or sunbathing. Take care if swimming – watch for those RED flags, ok?

Spend some time at the many beach clubs including Potato Head, Mrs Sippy, and Tropicola. These are just some of the premium venues in Seminyak. Features include the latest music, huge swimming pools with beach front access and for some the beaches are covered in bean bags and sun lounges.

Locals and visitors alike will tell you that the best coffee in Seminyak is to be found at PISON. The staff are wonderful and the service is great. Live music can be found here too. Another great favorite is Doppio Café PINK just 100 meters north of Jari Menari. Their chocolate products are to die for.

If you are in Seminyak and want to get PADI certified then consider a trip to Adventure Scuba Diving Bali. Beautiful clean warm waters to enjoy yourself with people training you to make the best of it and to do it safely.

The Nyaman Gallery, right near Jari Menari, is one of the best places to visit in Seminyak if you are interested in art and want to support the arts scene in Bali. Most of the pieces on display are made by local Balinese and Indonesian artists with an emphasis on showcasing up-and-coming new talent.

If you are looking for some nightlife in Seminyak then Bali Joe and Mixwell are two of the few openly LGBT venues on the island. They are virtually side by side so go to both. While Bali is generally a permissive and open-minded place, some members of the LGBT community may feel more comfortable at a dedicated LGBT nightclub, and if this is the case then these bars make a great choice.

Jalan Laksmana is one of the main roads in Seminyak and is it known as a shopping haven not only in Seminyak but across wider Bali as well. Here you will find a vast selection of big brands which include resort clothes like Saba and Mist and surf wear such as Drifter. Seminyak Square is an ideal spot to start your shopping adventures.

Today, the Dancing Fingers are resting.

For most days of the year, Jari Menari is filled with movement. Therapists prepare their hands, treatment rooms welcome guests, and the familiar rhythm of touch continues from morning to evening. But today feels different. On August 28, our doors are closed for a very special reason. This is a day for our team to pause, gather, and celebrate a journey that began exactly twenty five years ago.

On August 28, 2001, Jari Menari first opened its doors in Bali. What started as a place dedicated to thoughtful massage and professional training has grown through years of practice, learning, and human connection. Every year has brought new guests, new therapists, new experiences, and new stories. Yet the heart of Jari Menari has remained close to where it began, in the belief that skilled hands can communicate care in a way that words sometimes cannot.

Today is not simply about looking back at how many years have passed. It is also about appreciating the people who have made those years possible. Behind every Dancing Fingers experience is a therapist who has spent time learning, practicing, listening, and understanding the art of touch. There are teachers who have shared their knowledge, team members who have supported one another, and generations of therapists who have helped carry the Jari Menari philosophy forward.

For twenty five years, our therapists have spent their days caring for others. They have welcomed guests from around the world, shared their skills, and created moments of rest for thousands of people. Today, it is their turn to enjoy a moment of their own. The massage tables can rest, the treatment rooms can be quiet, and the hands that are usually busy helping others can take a well deserved pause.

This anniversary also belongs to every guest who has become part of the Jari Menari story. Some visited us once during a holiday in Bali. Others returned again and again over the years. Some discovered us through a friend, while others have been part of our journey for much longer than they may realize. Each visit has added something to the story we are celebrating today.

Twenty five years is a meaningful milestone, but it is not a finish line. There is still more to learn, more to share, and many more people to welcome. The techniques may continue to evolve and the Jari Menari family may continue to grow, but the intention behind every movement remains the same. To offer a massage experience built on skill, awareness, connection, and care.

So for today, the Dancing Fingers are resting. They are celebrating the memories, the people, the lessons, and the many hands that have shaped Jari Menari since 2001.

Training is key at Jari Menari to maintain standards and consistency. We see Guests are often deeply
touched and impressed with the ‘intuitive dancing fingers’ of the Practitioner they receive a session
from and will request the same Practitioner again and again. It is delightful how the Staff names are
remembered by guests for many years.

So, the Senior Staff last year, begun a coaching program to enhance requests from all Practitioners.
Dividing them into 5 teams, the 10 Leaders are responsible for enhancing the knowledge of anatomy,
application of techniques and understanding Jari Menari philosophies in their colleagues.

In the first seven months of the program we saw a huge increase in staff requests and to celebrate the
success of the program, (and birthdays of Melsa and Nyoman) we went out to celebrate over lunch.
Team work is what makes the Jari Menari Family unique and successful! The program continues in the
next year with a bonus for the team that has generated the most requests in the following 12 months,
combined. The spirirt of competition to enhance guest requests is a good program that you can partic-
ipate in; we will honor and welcome your request at any time.

Welcome back Vincent!
A Jari Menari Team member when we first opened and a Super Star Massage Practitioner,
Vincent is now living and practicing his healing arts of massage in Rotterdam. It was a treat for
the newer Team members to meet Vincent and hear stories of what Jari Menari was like in 2001,
when he was learning English, anatomy and massage skills. Thank you for the memories and
advise shared, it is a heart-felt thrill to see you again!
Behind the Scenes;
Dreaming, Creating and Making New Staff uniforms

If you’re a regular at Jari Menari, you may have noticed that twice a year, we select new designs and
colors for our staff uniforms. We like to honour the Balinese and Indonesian culture by showcasing the
Indonesian textiles and the hand-worked techniques of the local artisans, many of whom operate
home industries within some of the island’s remote villages.

We are proud to support these highly skilled craftsmen and women – our pattern maker, screen printer,
tailor and seamstresses – to design and create our top quality uniforms, sarongs, bathrobes and bags,
which are produced from traditional screen printed and batik processed fabrics. For our recent new
uniforms, we have chosen predominantly blue motifs on white backgrounds to reflect the nature and
vitality of the island.

Jari Menai - Behind The Scene

Even the paper dressmaking patterns are handmade, by Geok, our expert patternmaker. Ensuring that
there is minimal wastage of the fabrics, our tailors and seamstresses then cut and immaculately sew
and stitch the cotton and best-quality rayon materials, using vintage treadle sewing machines in their
spotlessly clean workshops.

The famous batik process is one of the many remarkable techniques that make the Jari Menari
uniforms, bathrobes and sarongs so distinctive. Batik designs are created by covering part of the fabric
with wax and dyeing it. The dye doesn't penetrate the wax, which is then melted away, before being
repeated to leave behind intricate multi-colored patterns. Motifs drawn with a ‘canting’ or wax-filled pen
are called ‘batik tulis’. Alternatively, the wax is applied with a copper stamp, known as a ‘cap’ (pro-
nounced chap). If a marble effect is desired, the wax is deliberately cracked before being placed in the
dye bath. The dye seeps into the tiny cracks, which create the fine lines that are characteristic of batik.
Natural fabrics such as densely woven cotton is selected for the cloth, so that it can absorb the wax
during the dye resisting process.

Jari Menai - Behind The Scene

Our screen printer uses the hand-worked technology of his homemade manual machine, which com-
prises a lot of moving parts that must fit perfectly together in order to achieve the best end result. Phys-
ical effort is required to rotate the carousel and lift and lower the print heads, while he pushes different
colored inks through the six, paddle-shaped, stenciled mesh screens, one color at a time. Jari Menari’s
“full hand” logo is screen printed onto our shirts, and additionally, we have just started making Jari
Menari bags, which broadcast an important environmental message “The team at Jari Menari is keep-
ing Bali clean and green” to promote awareness. The message is printed on both sides of each bag, one
side is in English and the other is in Bahasa Indonesia.
